Warning: This article spoils parts of One Piece Film: Red.One Piece Film: Red premiered in U.S. theaters on Nov. 4, 2022, earning more than $9 million (per Crunchyroll) in North America. Many fans were surprised at the direction this film took as they formerly believed Uta to be one of the main protagonists.

However, Uta ended up being the main antagonist of the film, and Luffy and Shanks had to team up to defeat her. Uta has been well-loved by many fans despite her stand as an antagonist. She is a compelling character with a unique Devil Fruit power, and she may just be the best movie antagonist for One Piece yet.
She Is The First Female Antagonist In A One Piece Film
Prior to One Piece Film: Red, every One Piece film antagonist had been a male. Eiichiro Oda said, "I'm tired of drawing legendary old men in movies LOL! Let me draw a girl! This is the character we want to create now!"

This is how the idea began when creating Uta, and she spawned into something much different from what had previously done in the One Piece movies. She had a connection to characters within the story, specifically Luffy and Shanks. Having a connection to Shanks was a great marketing tactic that had fans far more hyped than they would have been otherwise.
She Was Luffy's First Rival
Luffy is one of the most popular anime characters and while his past is well-known by fans and the time he spent with his brothers Ace and Sabo, Uta was technically his first childhood friend and rival. Luffy first meets Ace when Luffy already has his Devil Fruit power and his Straw Hat, so knowing this it's clear that he met Uta first.
The two of them constantly performed different challenges with each of them claiming to have won over one hundred victories with no losses. As fans get to see one of these competitions in action it becomes clear that Uta is always the winner, though she always cheats, so in Luffy's eyes, he's always the winner.

Her Devil Fruit Is Called The Sing-Sing Fruit
Uta possesses one of the most overpowered Devil Fruits in One Piece called the Sing-Sing Fruit, and it isn't known how she stumbled upon the fruit or whether her love of singing stemmed from the Devil Fruit.
Her Devil Fruit power enables her to transport peoples' consciousnesses by singing into a different realm called the Uta World. She has total control of this realm as she pleases and seems to have no limits. The only way to leave the Uta World is for Uta to fall asleep in the real world.
She Has Extremely Weak Stamina

Uta has extremely weak stamina which likely has to do with the drain her Devil Fruit has on her. Unfortunately, her singing is both a blessing and a curse due to her not being able to stay awake for very long.

The Wake-shroom comes into this in the film and keeps Uta awake for as long as she eats it, however, eating the mushrooms comes at the cost of one's life once they stop eating them. This is sadly how Uta meets her end by the conclusion of the film.
Her Ideals Fall In Line With The Revolutionary Army But Are More Radical
Interestingly enough but Uta's ideals fall relatively in line with the Revolutionary Army. The film covers the oppression that the World Government inflicts upon the common people of the world, but it also showcases how pirates are no better and make their lives even worse.

There is no mention of the Revolutionary Army in the film, but Uta stands in as a symbol of hope that the people depend on for refuge. However, her ideas are more radical as she wishes to keep peoples' consciousnesses locked inside her Uta World for eternity.
The Drawing On Her Sleeve Is Based On Luffy's Drawing Of The Straw Hat
Both Luffy and Uta have a deep love for Shanks as well as his Straw Hat. As fans will remember from the early episodes of One Piece, Luffy is far from the best of artists. This is true in his youth as he draws a picture of Shanks's Straw Hat that hardly looks like it.

Uta treasures this design though and has it made onto her sleeve in honor of Shanks and Luffy. This shows that Uta hasn't forgotten Luffy after all of these years and also hasn't completely blamed Shanks for leaving her on Elegia after all of those years.

She Is Not Biologically Shanks's Daughter
Uta's color scheme largely includes the color red and fans were initially told that she was the daughter of one of the strongest Emperors in One Piece, Shanks. However, no one really suspected that she wasn't actually biologically related to him.
The Red-Haired Pirates find Uta in their youth as a baby in a chest, reminding Shanks of how Roger found him as a child. Regardless, Uta is Shanks's daughter and the daughter of the Red-Haired Pirates in general. Something Oda constantly touches upon throughout One Piece is the importance of family and how blood isn't important for something like that.
Her Wings May Be A Connection To Skypieans And Lunarians

Fans still don't know whether Uta's wings are real or whether they're only conjured in the Uta World but with how often she has them they seem to be real. It's possible that she may be a child from Skypiea given the similarities to their wings.
It's also possible they belong to some other race that Oda hasn't introduced to fans yet in the manga. There's also a possible connection to Lunarians as Uta's wings turn black when she uses Tot Musica. However, this could simply just be a representation of her corruption.
Uta's threat level was incredibly high before she even used Tot Musica. Her plan to lure as many people into her Uta World with her singing was brilliant and dangerous. When the World Government saw immediately that this wasn't something she intended to do temporarily they knew they needed to act.

Dozens of Marine ships were sent toward Uta as well as two Marine Admirals. It's likely that Ryokugyu would've also been sent if the film had been created a bit later. While Gear 5, one of Luffy's best techniques in One Piece, did appear in the film that seemed to be the last addition for fan service rather than part of the original script.
Tot Musica Made Her The Strongest Character Yet
Tot Musica's power was incredible and terrifying, it took multiple pirate crews as well as some Marines to overcome Uta and finally defeat her. It doesn't help that in some ways Uta wasn't totally committed to the battle anymore and Tot Musica seemed to overwhelm her.

Uta may have been able to beat both Luffy and Shanks had she kept control of Tot Musica and remained their opponent. Regardless, the powers of Tot Musica and Uta's Devil Fruit combined were incredibly dangerous and have made Uta the strongest character One Piece fans have seen yet.
